Gluten-free at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino
Big doings tonight. We have tickets to the Michael Jackson ONE Cirque de Soleil show and reservations at Slice of Vegas, both at Mandalay Bay. Seeing ONE is on my bucket list, so Shawn bought tickets for my birthday. We did a quick online search and it's actually one of the shows in Vegas that is considered family friendly. Go us. While at the pool with my trusty iPhone I did a cursory search of Mandalay Bay restaurants and found Slice of Vegas. I remember eating there a couple years ago with Shanna and Steph before the Pitbull concert and I have fond memories of gluten-free pasta and imported GF beer. Pasta sounds like a winner to me. I'll let you know if they live up to the memory.
First I'll just preface my comments by saying that it takes a bit more to “wow" me than it did when I first became a gluten-free girl and we really didn't need a reservation as it was early enough in the evening that there was plenty of available seating. I appreciate restaurants that offer gluten-free pasta as an option and Slice of Vegas has several sauces to choose from as well as protein and veggie add-ins. I had my heart set on the white wine butter sauce with shrimp and roasted veggies but was informed by our waitress that the sauce is made with wheat. So disappointing. That left me with only red sauces to choose from and I am not a fan of red sauce and seafood soooo, I ordered marinara with chicken. It wasn't really what I wanted but it was fine. Was my bowl of pasta worth $20? Not even close. Shawn ordered the salmon primavera from the house classics list and claims it's one of the top-five meals he has ever had. I have to say, his fish looked fantastic and the fragrant butter sauce made me drool. I didn't even order an imported gluten-free Daura Damm beer since I had a six-pack chilling in the fridge back at the condo. I stumbled across it at Whole Foods a couple days earlier so yeah, not as elusive as I thought.
So all in all, the food didn't knock my socks off and the thrill of finding a fun gluten-free beer was gone but the Michael Jackson ONE show was off the charts. If you are interested in seeing a Cirque show I highly recommend taking a good look at Michael Jackson ONE and if you are reining for gluten-free carbs, Slice of Vegas has you covered. Sometimes the (gluten-free pasta) memory is better than reality

A note to readers:
I am gluten sensitive/intolerant so I am not overly concerned with possible cross contamination. If you have severe reactions, I recommend taking additional precautions. |
